In 2002 the Scranton Police K-9 Unit was reinstated after a long absence. Officer Stelmak and Officer Pappas selected to fill the void. The two handlers were sent to the Philadelphia Police Academy with their new K-9 partners for six months of training. They were put into service in 2003.
Chief Elliot saw the need to have a K-9 officer on every shift and selected Officer Ed McIntyre to be the city’s third handler. In 2003 Officer McIntyre and his partner “Arko” were attending their training in Binghamton, NY.
All three K-9’s are trained in narcotic detection along with patrol work (searches).
This addition has been a valuable asset to the department.
The K-9 Unit is also available to work with our Crime Prevention Unit. This involves presentations in schools and special events.
